Larger than Life

Giant chariots, with massive wheels that can crush all who come in their path, and many times bigger than Arjuna’s or Ramsay’s or Julius Caesar’s; gigantic masks of wrathful tantric gods, fearsome in appearance, and so imbibed with mysticism that that are put on view but once a year; exotic Kumari, the only living goddess in the whole wide world, and before whom even kings and presidents bow their heads humbly with reverence; energetic dances that endow the surroundings with and vigor, and performed as enthusiastically as they have always been since ancient times; a swarming multitude of eager spectators from all around the globe, clicking away like crazy, for it’s a spectacle as is not found anywhere else; Kathmandu Durbar Square, a world heritage site monument, and a living museum at that, now the center of an event so grand, it literally pulsates with excitement for eight days straight.

All these come together to celebrate Indra Jatra, the most important festival of a city that prides itself on its vast wealth of art, history, and culture. Indra Jatra, a fitting homage to the god of rain for his benevolence in granting an excellent monsoon year after year without fail to the many-times-blessed Valley of the Gods.
