Ladies Only Please!: Women in Concert

Happening Issue 71 Jul, 2010
Text by Dinesh Rai

This year Sheri has taken it upon her shoulders to organize "Women in Concert V". It's a daunting task–bringing the singers together, organizing practice with a group of musicians from various bands, looking for sponsors, fixing up the venue, working out the finances and then getting ready to get up on the stage and sing herself. I wouldn't want to be in her shoes. Of course, there are others working behind the scenes too.

We met Sheri and some of the girls at Vidhea's place where they were practicing. Some known faces, some new. The new faces are Ayesha Giri, Aarati Gurung, Stuty Maskey and Salina Lama (above from left to right). Preeti Kaur, Sheri Thapa and Yankey Ongmu Lepcha (above right to left) sang last year. "Abhaya Subba Weise, Pooja Gurung, Rachana Gurung Sharma and Bandana Lama will also be there," says Sheri. The band features Jatin Pradhan on lead guitar, Rajat Rai on rhythm, Abhishek Bhadra on keyboards, Sonam on bass and Antonio of Pax Armada whom we met at the Blues Festival, on drums.

This year the ladies have decided to add some spice; there will be Hindi and Nepali songs besides English hits. And why not, many people listen to Hindi as well. Variety is the spice of life, they say. The singers themselves are from various walks of life: teachers, journalists, professional singers, RJs and TV anchors. They come together once each year to raise money for " Sewa Kendra Leprosy Relief “ and part of the funds will go to this charity. While its hard work practicing to get things right, the girls have fun too.
